Cento invited Oscar Prentice-Middleton to be in residence at 20 Albert Road across March and April 2025. His goal was to find methods of formalising the presentation of existing works and to develop new ideas, following the conclusion of various collaborative projects in 2024. His practice combines sculptural form with sound, often employing digital and analog signal processing technologies. He creates and explores crossovers between the visual and the sonic which range from the poignant to the absurd, meaning 20 Albert Road provided an opportunity for both dialogue and experimentation.
The residency resulted in two public outcomes: the installation of if (edge=reached) {turnaround;} else {fly;} at the midway point, and a discursive presentation comprising works-in-progress shown on the final weekend. In both, Prentice-Middleton combined, to various comic and disturbing effects, the disembodied and deceptive qualities of sound with the silence and matter-of-fact quality of everyday objects, digital images and audio equipment. While viewers were located in a real space, sound elements drew attention to invented visitors, invisible performances or overlooked spaces in the gallery.
